The
ELECTRICITY UTILISATION GROUP continues its work allied to the Engineering Department of the Cambridge University. The leader of the group, Dr Ricky Metaxas, has moved to St John's College, Cambridge, to continue the Group's operations with his colleagues listed above postgraduate research in the area of radio frequency and microwave heating coronas and electroheat in general.

Efforts at present center on MICROWAVE and RADIO FREQUENCY heating as well as modelling of coronas and arcs

IN-HOUSE ELECTROMAGNETIC SOFTWARE

The E.U.G has developed an in-house FE code for microwave heating (900-2450 MHz) and has also adapted the code for Radio Frequency heating in the range 10-50 MHz. The microwave simulation work can also handle wall losses and thin metallic films for food packaging applications. First and higher order edge elements can be used in simulating the e/m field within microwave heating cavities.

IN-HOUSE SIMULATION OF CORONA LEADING TO ARCS

A major activity involves the simulation of coronas and streamers at DC and RF in order to study the vexed issue of corona which can lead to arcing in radio frequency industrial heating or drying. The Finite Element code has been combined with the well known FCT (Flux Corrected Transport) method to produce an FE-FCT code for such work. The code has now been extended and validated to 3D and additional code has been written and coupled to the original corona code to simulate numerically the transition from corona to arc. More publications will follow soon.

BOOKS emanating from the EUG

Foundations of Electroheat: A unified approach
A student edition is now available. Details of its contents and cost here.
Industrial Microwave Heating
This book is still on sale even though it was first published in 1983. It has been reprinted in 1988 andf 1993. It still forms an authoritative treatise of modern microwave heating principles and practice. The authors are Dr Ricky Metaxas and Mr Roger Meredith. It can be obtained directly from the publishers IEE, Michael Faraday House, Six Hills Way, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 2AY, UK. Short course on Radio Frequency and Microwave Heating

A series of one and a half day short courses have been organised routinely. The latest course was held during 12-13 Sept 2006. This course entails the fundamentals of RF and microwave heating and is intended for industrialists and academics, however, we can tailor it to suit any special requirements.

The NEXT SHORT COURSE will be announced in this website. Also you can visit www.metaxas-associates.com for details and to download a registration form.

For more information contact Dr AC Metaxas on: Tel and Fax: +44 (0) 1223 338646 or Tel +44(0) 1223 353076, E-mail acm33@cam.ac.uk or acm@metaxas-associates.com mobile 07710 037 127

Microwave and High Frequency Heating Conference Series

The above series are organised under the auspices of AMPERE the European based association which is devoted to promoting RF and microwave heating techniques to industry and commerce (see below). The association's President is at present Professor Elias de Los Reyes of the University of Valencia, Spain.

Next AMPERE CONFERENCE will be held at ORADEA, ROMANIA during 3-6 September 2007. Visit here for details.

Ampere Association [AMPERE EUROPE PLC]

and its Newsletter (available on-line only as from April 2007)

AMPERE, is a European based association which is devoted to promoting RF and microwave heating techniques in industry and commerce. Its President is at present Prof Elias de los Reyes who is at the technical University of Valencia, Spain.

AMPERE is a registered as a non-profit organisation based in the UK. The association is currently run by a committee elected by AMPERE members. Professor J Binner and his staff at Loughborough University administer the day to day running of the association and any enquiries about joining should be addressed to Loughborough (see AMPERE website). Subscription rates are very modest, currently being: £50 (European members) and £60 (rest of the world members) for a two year membership. Visit AMPERE website here.

Dr. Ricky Metaxas also edits the AMPERE NEWSLETTER covering topics in radio frequency and microwave heating from 1 MHz to 20 GHz. Short articles for inclusion in the Newsletter are very welcome and prospective authors should contact the editor in the first instance. If you wish to place an ADVERTISEMENT in the quarterly Newsletter contact Ricky Metaxas. Rates are modest.  Issues are normally published in January, April, July and October.

As from 2007 the Newsletter will go online and it will not be sent to members in printed format. More details will be given in the AMPERE website.
