Industry
Collaboration with industry and other research organizations is essential for the
DVD Group's aims to be achieved. Collaboration enables the Group to:
- transfer its research findings to organizations that can exploit them;
- ensure that its research is relevant to the needs of industry;
- access skills and knowledge within the collaborating organization;
- access specialist equipment and testing facilities;
- lever funding from research councils and other funding bodies.
Collaboration enables industry to:
- participate in and benefit from research of commercial value;
- obtain early or exclusive knowledge of new research findings;
- influence the direction of new research;
- access specialist skills and knowledge in the DVD Group and the University;
- interact with and recruit high-quality graduates and post-doctoral staff;
- develop the DVD Group as a source of ideas and people.
There are many ways in which industry can collaborate, including:
- support a final-year MEng project;
- jointly fund a three-year PhD research studentship with EPSRC;
- fully fund a three-year PhD research studentship;
- contribute in cash or in kind to a post-doctoral research project funded by EPSRC or EU;
- fully fund a post-doctoral research project.
- consultancy - best for short timescale research.
Supporting an MEng project is perhaps the best way to begin collaborating with the DVD Group.
This option presents little risk but offers the opportunity to see the benefits of collaboration before
considering a greater commitment. Many successful collaborations have begun in this way.
Collaboration usually takes place under the terms of a contract negotiated with the University's
Research Office. The contract includes
clauses to deal with confidentiality and intellectual property rights.
Broader information about how industry can interact with the
University can be found in the
Business page.
