4B7 Laboratory Coursework Information (2013-14)

The coursework submitted for 4B7 counts for 25% of the available credit for the module.  You are recommended to do both experiments, as both have relevance to the course; however, only one report may be submitted for credit.

For either experiment, please make the report at most four pages long. You may include extra pages of data, graphs and images above the total. 


In 2014 the 4B7 exam is scheduled for 28th April, 2-3.30 - early in the timetable!
For this reason reports need to be in by the end of the Lent Full Term. 
Specimen write-ups will be provided after the hand-on deadline to help with revision.


The deadline for handing in your report for the coursework items described below will be 4pm on Friday 14th March 2014Note the early deadline, which has been chosen on the assumption that the 4B7 examination will be scheduled around the same date as last year.

Writing up does not get easier with the passage of time, and we would strongly recommend that you begin this without delay, while the memory of the experiment is fresh.

Please submit reports to the EIETL (Mr Gautrey) - they may be posted in the coursework cabinet on the landing outside. Your write-up MUST be accompanied by a properly completed coursework cover sheet, which most of you will have received at the experiment. These will also be available from Mr Gautrey in the EIETL.  In the event you cannot obtain one this way, please visit the Teaching Office to collect a cover sheet. Reports submitted without a cover sheet cannot be accepted for credit. Please make sure your cover sheet is clearly marked with your details and the name of the responsible member of staff:

Description

Two laboratory experiments have been organised for the 4B7 Module. These are:

The Microscopical Examination option will be done by groups of 4 or 5;  we expect there will be sufficient opportunities for all who wish to do it, even if they choose to write up the other experiment.

1. Scanning Electron Microscopical Examination of CMOS Circuit (2 hours)

The main sessions are available for groups of nominally 4 (preferred, 5 absolute maximum), and are being run with kind assistance from Mr Bernie Breton. 

Joining instructions

The sessions will be held in the SEM lab, Room 40, Electrical Engineering Division, 9 J J Thomson Avenue, Cambridge.  Please note: this is on the West Cambridge site, about a 15 minute bike ride from CUED.  Map reference is here .  On the day, pleaswe make yourselves known at CAPE Reception.  Someone will lead you to the appropriate place at the appointed time.  Please don't be late!

You must book a session in advance for this experiment.  A CamTools (Eng. Tripos 4B7) On-line booking sheet will be made live from Wednesday 19th FebruaryPlease sign up.  We reserve the right to remove or rearrange sessions for operational reasons.

Important Notes:  Capacity is strictly limited to 5 in the SEM lab, and there will not be space for any who have not made a firm booking.  Please sign up in one of the available slots.
A lab-sheet will be issued and a  write-up will be required from each student wishing to use this experiment to qualify for coursework credit.  You will need to hand in the lab-sheet as well.
Note: it will not be possible to organise catch-up or additional sessions for this experiment.

2. Electrical Characterisation of CMOS Ring Oscillator (2 hours)

This will normally be done in groups of two, though it may be possible to do the experiment singly if you prefer, depending upon capacity.  We expect to be able to provide three stations to carry out this experiment, i.e. enough for three simultaneous groups of two.

Joining instructions

The experiment has being set up in the EIET Lab, on the 1st floor of the Inglis Building.  You will need to book a session.  A CamTools (Eng. Tripos 4B7) On-line booking sheet will go live from Wednesday 19th February - please sign up.  On the day, please arrive in EIETL in good time for the start of the lab.

Sessions are available at the following times, with a demonstrator (Mr Jaime Tenorio-Pearl) attending:-

Catch-up sessions without demonstrator support are possible at other times during the week, but you are expected to sign up for a scheduled session.

Three stations will be available on each day. Please organise yourselves into groups of two and enter group names in the chosen slots. A lab-sheet will be issued and a write-up will be required from each student wishing to use this experiment to qualify for coursework credit. Students involved are shown in the tables below.
