Morphing Structures
Metamorphosing, or "morphing", structures undergo radical and
elastic changes in shape without compromising material
limitations. We obtain solutions by favourably combining the
effects of non-linear large deformation, pre-stress, and material
constitutive behaviour. Their shape-changing purpose imparts
extra functionality to the original structure without affecting
its integrity. Applications range from extra-compact, unfurling
portable electronic devices to shape-changing vehicles that tailor
their own aerodynamical properties.

Membrane Wrinkling
Wrinkling of thin membranes are an aspect of everyday life; from the way
in which fabric drapes over supporting structures to the formation of
facial laugh lines and bodily creases in human skin. This project is
concerned with producing highly accurate, pre-tensioned surfaces that act as
reflectors but where wrinkles will inevitably form at support points, thereby
disrupting the surface integrity; we are therefore aiming to devise a scheme
for predicting and mitigating wrinkles in such membranes.

Material
Activation and Structural Actuators
Our work is concerned with exploiting material activation and
novel geometrical concepts, for creating structural actuators with
no moving parts, capable of delivering relatively large
displacements. Such purpose permits devices of mechanical
simplicity for use in novel applications where there is demand for
control of large changes in shape, e.g. as in digital loudspeaker
technology. Thematically, the work
complements problems involving thermal buckling, where one aim is
to limit displacements, to improve processing quality, as in the
production of semiconductor wafers by a rapid irradiation method.

Bioengineering
We are not concerned with biomimetics, rather, with understanding
particular biological processes from the engineering perspective,
by treating the biological tissue as an engineering material. Our
work has largely focussed on the response of skin tissue to
thermal activation, in order to gauge pain levels for efficacious
heat treatments. Other recent work includes the quantification of
the mechanical properties of genetically engineered plants for use
in bio-fuels (see the University's bioenergy initiative).

Structural Dynamics
This research follows on from the PhD work of KAS, where he
considered the deployment of foldable elastic structures for use
on spacecraft. In this earlier work, the principle novelty was
in modelling the natural deployment dynamics in terms of variable
mass systems. This work has been recently re-activated in view of work
on the collapse of tall buildings, specifically, with regard to
the collapse of the WTC Towers on 9/11.

Design
and Optimisation
This bulk of projects below were carried out by KAS as a
postdoctoral researcher and thus, are now completed. The general
theme centered on the quantification of design, in pursuit of optimal
configurations of device. For example, strict concepts in
control theory were brought to bear on the solution of
bicycle-rider interaction, in order to enable the prediction of
the controllability and hence, safety of new, alternative bicycle layouts.A
new topic is in the optimal design of radically efficient aircraft.
