LEAGUE RULES (Updated April 2001)

1.     That this League be called “The Inter-Departmental Cricket League”, and shall consist of Clubs from the University Departments.  Each Club shall pay an annual subscription of £10 irrespective of whether they enter league, cup or both.

2.     The playing members of each Club shall consist only of Teaching staff, University employees, Postgraduates and Research workers from their own department.  Departments may amalgamate to form a Club on obtaining permission from the Annual Meeting.  The application to do so must be sent to the League Secretary 14 days before the Annual Meeting.  In exceptional circumstances, but only with the Committee’s sanction, guest players (maximum of two) can be allowed as long as they are connected with the University or are a former playing member of the Club concerned.  Their names must be submitted (in writing) to the Secretary prior to selection.

3.     The Clubs entered in the League shall play one match with each other, and each match will be played one evening only. If a match is called off due to rain, then one further attempt should be made to play the game, if this is also rained off, then the points are shared. If one team defaults for any other reason, the league secretary should be informed in writing within three days. If the match is called off for a second time by the same team, the non-defaulting team will be awarded two points.

4.     All matches shall commence by 6.00 pm.  If the first ball is not bowled by 6.15 pm the non-defaulting team can claim the match under Rule 15.

5.     All League games shall consist of 20 (6 ball) overs for each side, but in the event of adverse weather conditions, the minimum will be 15 overs by mutual consent between the Captains.  If a late start is made due to the weather, it is expected that an agreement be reached whereby the game is either rearranged, or each team has an equal number of overs in the time remaining, but in any case not less than 10 overs per side.  In the event of a game having been started and then being abandoned due to the weather, if 10 overs or more have been completed by both sides, then the team having the higher scoring rate over the same number of overs will be declared the winner.  In the event of only one team batting, the game must be replayed.

6.     No bowler is to bowl more than five (6 ball) overs (but see 8 below).

7.     The winning team will receive two points, but in the event of a tie the points will be shared.

8.     All rounds of the K.O. Cup except the semi-final and final are to be played under League Rules with regard to the number of overs bowled by a bowler.  In the Cup semi-final and final which will be of 40 overs for each side, bowlers are limited to a maximum of ten (6 ball) overs.  Cup semi-finals and the Cup Final are played as afternoon fixtures.  A new ball will be provided for each innings in the Final.

9.     The final of the Cup competition is to have neutral umpires.

10.   If any match in the K.O. Cup results in a tie, the team scoring the highest number of runs with the bat will be declared the winners.  In the event of the game still being tied, the team scoring the most number of boundaries with the bat will be the winners.

11.   Any matches abandoned through adverse weather conditions must be replayed unless Rule 5 can be applied.  Should two or more Clubs be equal on points at the end of the season, deciding matches will be played.

12.   The playing of substitutes must be agreed upon by both Captains before the commencement of play unless caused by injury during the game.

13.   For all League matches and the cup competition (except the final) the home side is to provide a leather cricket ball acceptable to both Captains, which must not be changed during the match unless both Captains agree to do so.

14.   The final dates of the League fixtures and K.O. Cup competition fixed at the AGM shall not be extended unless adverse weather conditions prevail during the season.  The extended date is to be agreed upon at a meeting of the League Secretaries.

15.   It is open to any club to protest against any supposed infringement of these rules, but such a protest must be put in writing and contain the particulars upon which it is founded.  The protest must be received by the League Secretary within three days of the conclusion of the match.

16.   The season shall end on the last day of August.

17.   Any matter not arising in these rules shall be left in the hands of the Club Secretaries.
