There are many approaches to the teaching of programming. Even within CUED there those who write programs and those who are really writing maths.
Pascal is a reasonable compromise between the various conflicting requirements. The important thing is to stress that it is being used as a teaching tool - making sure that students are aware you are teaching the principles of good programming, not ``coding in Pascal".
